Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her Aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to be creative and drawn by the arts. Her aunt was a registered nurse working night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her day to art literature as well as theater, among other things. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an avenue for action. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. Although DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by city of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there led her to create a documentary about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing content for broadcast journalism while she was still at the college. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish inside the home of one of the jury. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided that she would switch to the business of public relations. DuVernay was brought in right out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. She also started several promotion and lifestyle networks for the urban beauty industry, including the Urban Beauty Collective.
